Eaglewing panted, leaping over a downed limb. No! It can't end like this! she cried in her mind, her paw twisting painfully. She gasped, almost falling. She had to get back to the Clan, and soon.
She had gone for a walk without permission. The queen was pregnant. She hadn't realized that maybe, just maybe this may be her kitting day.
Stupid! she berated herself, almost falling again. The contractions had started just by the Clan boundary, and they were getting more frequent. The only way this could be worse is if it rained.
Well, it did get worse, but it wasn't the rain that did it.
A fox leaped out in front of her, baring its fangs. It snarled gruffly, leaping at the cat.
The claws struck Eaglewings shoulder, sending the brown she-cat sprawling.
She lay there panting, giving up. Her kits..
She gasped, unable to stop the contractions.
The fox seemed startled at the females expression, a look of defiance and defeat mixing. Her stomach moved, and as the fox watched, shocked and surprised, she gave birth.
Eaglewing's vision swam, both from blood loss, and exhaustion. With one final breath, she passed on, her spirit making the journey alone to StarClan.
The fox was in fact a male, and his mate was hiding in the bushes Eaglewing was unlucky enough to pass. He'd just wanted to protect her, not realizing the other cat was pregnant also.
Even foxes have enough decency not harm a pregnant or nursing female, even if the female is a cat.
Sorrow and grief entered the foxes eyes. His own mate's litter had been stillborn, and so these kits too would die.
The fox, name of Sharp, nudged the embryo sacks, tearing them open and licking at the kits.
Most of them had the fortune to also be still-born; Eaglewings trek through the forest had been too much.
However, as Sharp licked one small she-kit, she started breathing.
Sharp was surprised; the others were dead, he was sure. So why was this one alive?
He picked the kit up gently, carrying her with him into his and his mate's den.
It was temporary; they had their own territory with family and friends, but they'd gone away so Hickory, his mate, could have her kits in peace.
Hickory was quiet as Sharp showed her the kit, but she nodded. "I will care for her as if she were my own," the vixen vowed, bringing the small kit to her belly.
She was a pretty sight, gray-green, the color of a precious stone.
"What will you name her?" Sharp asked quietly, settling beside his mate.
Hickory thought on this, before nodding. "Jade. Her name will be Jade."
-------------------------
Snarling filled the air, the cries and shrieks of wounded cats and foxes.
It was a full-blown war.
Sharp leaped at a large tabby tom, raking his claws at the infernal feline. "Go away!" He snarled, knowing the idiotic cat wouldn't understand.
The tom snarled back, something Sharp couldn't understand, and they fought.
"Jade!" Hickory called quietly, crouching beside her adopted daughter. "You must hide!"
"But mother.. they are here for me, aren't they?" The green she-cat whispered, eyes alight with horror. "Is this, this massacre my fault?"
"No! Well.. no. It is true they are here for you, but they will not get you!"
"Mother, Hickory, let me go. I do not want to cause suffering on my family." Jade's voice shook; she was close to a mental breakdown.
"No!" Hickory snarled, but was silence when a wave of cats broke through the line of patrols guarding the entrance to the cavern.
"We're here for you!" One of the intruders said happily, clawing at Hickory. "Come on!"
"No!" Jade snarled. "You come here and set to killing my family!"
"Your.. family?"
"This is my family!"
"You've been brainwashed!" the tom snarled, butting the young she-cat out of the cave.
Jade gave one last look at her mother, before disappearing.
It had only been a few moons, but the Clan Eaglewing had come from hadn't taken kindly to one of their own being killed, and even more when they learned one of Eaglewing's kits were with the foxes.
The foxes had the added misfortune of Eaglewing being the Clan leader's mate.
So a war had been called, to rescue the kit and take revenge on the foxes.
The cats won; the fox's loses were devastating, not to mention Sharp's loss.
His daughter had been stolen, his and Hickory's.
-------------------
"Then may StarClan recognize you as Jadepaw!" The Clan leader meowed proudly, smiling down at his daughter.
Jade, or Jadepaw, didn't look that excited.
It had been two months since the war.
Jade had quickly gotten used to Clan life, although she missed her Fox Family.
After seeing everything about the Clan, Jade decided her only calling here was to be a Medicine cat.
----------------
"From this day forward you shall be Jadefeather," the medicine cat meowed quietly, barely loud enough to be heard.
Jadefeather nodded. "Thank you," she mewed, equally as quietly.
Her mentor nodded back, stepping from the ledge.
The Leader smiled proudly, resting the tip of his tail on Jadefeather's shoulder.
She jerked away, walking back toward the medicine den.
His smile faded; Jadefeather had never accepted him, no matter how hard he had tried to become the father she'd never had. after all, foxes were vicious, the one she called "Sharp" couldn't have been anything like a real father.
Jadefeather entered the medicine den, cold and distant to everything around her.
